Not selling anything, and this is NOT a personal ad. Retired Silver City resident & expert small craft sailor looking to camp & sail at Elephant Butte Lake & Caballo Lake. I recently bought an 11' plastic Topper scow off C/L in Albuquerque, and I'm currently rerigging it so it can withstand some hardcore small craft sailing on the lakes. Topper boats are made in England, you can Google them for info & photos. I already bought a new Intensity sail to replace the original Topper mainsail, which is kaput. When I'm done rerigging the scow, it will be more than capable of tackling the two larger lakes. I also have a 10' plastic kayak which can be towed astern of the scow, that'll add room for another passenger, lol. All will be legal, no worries.
In my own deliberately small circle, I'm known as the guy who sailed a 14' Laser to all four of the Coronados, island wildlife sanctuaries off the northern end of Baja. I've also sailed a 12' Minifish the length of the Salton Sea... an epic bucket list voyage, lol. Most clubhouse kooks & posers are clueless about the Salton, it's actually a bad@$$ sailing venue, while the surrounding desert & mountain scenery is spectacular! I'm glad I sailed the Salton prior to bailing out of that state, as I wouldn't go back to California just to make that voyage. I've spent the past 10 years in the boondocks of Arizona & New Mexico: Show Low, Benson, Alamogordo, and now Silver City. It has been a good 10 years, plenty of primo trail riding & outdoor adventure.
With the purchase of this Topper scow, I'm looking to ramp up the sailing & camping, aye? My primary nautical mission is to sail the length of Elephant Butte Lake. Yes, I know both lake water levels are low, but hopefully the recent monsoon rains & future winter precipitation will boost those water levels. Even partial refilling will be fine, as no boat ramp is needed to launch this lightweight plastic scow (or the kayak, for that matter). As I've done for decades, I intend to cartop the boat, no trailer registration or maintenance that way... more money for steaks and alcoholic beverages, lol. As for camping, I've done it all my life, starting at an early age while car camping throughout Western Europe, continuing the saga in the USA Infantry, and taking it further with remote camping and a quarter-century of technical rock climbing with friends.
Any outdoor types interested in this sort of outdoor adventure, respond here with details. In less breeze, we can take turns sailing the scow, but with plenty of breeze, we can make an epic party voyage on the lake! I don't go sailing without a soft cooler full of drinks & lunch, lol. However, as an expert small craft sailor, I'm into high performance & boat speed, unless I'm towing the kayak, which will reduce speed somewhat, depending upon conditions, surface chop, etc. Know that I've been sailing for decades, and have no fear, lol. I have an 8-person tent plus field gear, bring your own if you want. Cheers! Mahalo!
